Bias and Spaces of Transition.

Invention Biases Disguiser

Invention Biases Disguises This exercise looks at how to interpret biases in analogue format and help aid in seeing invention biases of instruments and tools designed to control areas of transit. Particularly focusing on how biases of a body scanner in transitory spaces work in an imbalance manner. Some of the common biases experimented with the scanners are understood to be - difficulty in identifying certain head coverings, or hairstyles typically worn by black women or certain religions.

A body scanner was used as a site of inquiry. This invention disguises the notion of scanners not designed with people of color in mind, looking specifically at self-presentation shapes as determinants of direct access or delayed access.

Two characters, Maria and Hilary are used.  One character accesses scanner in shorter period due to less barriers as opposed to the other (showing inequality.

Weaving Extremeties

Vernacular Weaving has for many years influenced how we perceive - or understand evolution of culture, traditions and making. It serves as one of the main narrative devices around cultural techniques, methodology and materiality. The way in which one can interpret the borders of what weaving is defined to be, could be subjective.

Weaved material is at the scale of the body, interior, we are familiar with it’s touch, use and experience. With the advance of material, there is an opportunity to take weaving to the next level of multi-sensoriality.

I’m interested in the manner at which one can push the borders of weaving, to create a new meaning of weaving. My tapestry aims to explore the extreme borders of weaving, through its very hands on nature of making.

The designs do not carry any literal symbolic meaning, to allow for a creative invention of new forms.

It explores the boundary between what is considered to be primitive and not, by subverting the rudimentary flax weave to a much more prominent clay weave.

Restoration of the Absence

Phantom limb is defined as the constant experience and connection to a lost limb. My project looks at the phantom limb as an existing limb on someone, but that has lost full or partial functionality. It takes on the neck as a point of site in attempt to re-create and restore good posture.

The world we live in today enforces that we live a certain way. The constant texting, working at a computer or even driving, forces your head to move forward in attempt to focus. This may result in posture distortion. Through gravitational forces, Every 2.5 cm that your head moves forward, it gains 4.5kg. Resulting in neck pains that form trigger points that then later lead to back pains.

This device is an educational device that takes a technical approach to neck and posture distortion . It trains your body to understand what correct alignment feels like by allowing for your neck muscles to relax, especially when working on the computer, reading a book or even cooking. The idea behind it was to make it lighter, less bulkier, Easy to wear and lastly something that doesn't empede head movement unlike other neck braces or similar products in the market
